WHO ARE WE
Tshipi é Ntle Manganese Mining (Pty) Ltd operates the open pit manganese mine, called Tshipi Borwa Mine, in the Kalahari Manganese Field (KMF) located in the Northern Cape. Tshipi é Ntle means “beautiful steel” in the local Tswana language. Waste development and infrastructure construction commenced in 2011 and the first ore was exported in 2012.
The Tshipi Borwa mine is a modern low cost manganese black economic empowered producer that has been setting the benchmark for how mines should be constructed, managed and operated in the New South Africa.
Owing to the nature of Tshipi’s mineral deposit, the mining thereof is a simple “truck and shovel” open cast operation. In essence the top soil is removed and stockpiled in a separate area for later use during the rehabilitation phase. The various layers of the Kalahari formation are removed, followed by the harder banded ironstone, dolomite and manganese layers which are part of the Hotazel formation. Once the manganese ore is exposed, it is drilled, blasted and loaded onto a truck and hauled to the primary crusher which feeds the main Run of Mine stockpile
